Holy hotness Batman! We’re in the midst of a heat wave and boy oh boy is it HOT 🥵 since we can’t avoid it, let’s help each other stay cool. ⁣

Here’s 10 tips to beat the heat:⁣

•Drink lots of water. It is important to stay hydrated to keep your body cool. You should be aiming to drink half of your body weight in oz. per day. ⁣For example, if you are 150 lbs. you should aim to drink 75 ounces of water per day. 200 lbs. = 100 ounces of water

• Don’t believe all the hype when it comes to those sugary sports drinks. The amount of sugar and artificial colors and ingredients are doing more harm than good when it comes to hydrating your body. Stick to good old fashioned water and drop a lemon or some berries in it if you’re looking for some flavor. ⁣

• Stay inside with the AC on a comfortable setting if possible. If AC is not an option, make sure to use ceiling or portable fans to keep the air circulating. ⁣You can even make your own cooler by putting blocks of ice in front of the fan.

• Keep your curtains drawn to keep the sunlight and heat out and the cold air in. ⁣

• Use ice packs or cold water to cool yourself off. The back of the neck, top of head and feet all help regulate body temp. Putting an ice pack on any of those places will help keep your overall body temp down. ⁣

• Wear loose, light colored clothing made out of breathable fabrics such as cotton, hemp or linen. No need to keep ourselves sucked into microfibers that keep the sweat, and heat in. ⁣

• When outdoors, keep your skin protected with long sleeved shirts, pants and a wide brimmed hat. I know it sounds crazy to wear full coverage clothe in the heat, but keeping your skin covered will help to keep you cool. Promise.

• Make sure to eat low fat, low salt foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables to help keep your internal temp down. The harder your metabolism has to work, the hotter you're gonna be.

• Run errands, exercise or other outdoor activities in the morning or evening when temps are cooler.

• If possible, hang out in a body of water such as a pool, lake or river to keep cool and have some fun. ⁣It should come as no surprise that one of my favorite summertime activities is hanging on the lake. Whether in a kayak, on a paddleboard or simply lounging on a floaty, the lake is the place to be during the summer in the North State.
