Chakra Balancing
This time of year, when the days are short, and the nights are long, our body naturally goes into a stage of rest and rejuvenation, which seems like an odd time to try set, and conquer, big goals. Balancing your chakras is an easy way to step into the new year feeling your best without giving in to the stress that is caused by the hustle culture which tells us to set big goals during a time of year when we should be relaxing and focusing on self-care.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. First, let’s talk about what chakras are and what they do. Our chakras are the main energy points in our body. Legend has it, these energy wheels follow us from life to life. Each of the main seven chakras has an associated color, element, crystal, and oils that may help to balance it.
Balancing the Crown Chakra
Starting from the top of our heads, is the Crown Chakra. The Crown Chakra is known as the great white light and is associated with our ability to fully connect spiritually. When blockages occur in the Crown Chakra it can lead to depression, anxiety, confusion, and apathy. To clear these blockages, it is important to ask for exactly what it is that you want while holding a clear quartz crystal. You can also write down your intentions and what it is that you are grateful for. If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, then you already know that I truly believe that an attitude of gratitude changes everything.
Essential oils of Lavender, Frank, White Angelica, Myrrh, or Cedarwood may help to clear blockages in the Crown Chakra. I suggest applying one drop of your choice of Crown Chakra clearing oil directly to the top of your head while setting your intentions and affirming the following “I am at peace”. Other ways to help balance the Crown Chakra are to meditate, do yoga, repeat mantras or positive affirmations. Make sure that while doing Crown Chakra balancing activities you sit up tall and imagine the top of your head reaching towards the sky.
Balancing the Third Eye
Next up is the Third Eye which is located on the center of our forehead. The Third Eye is associated with our intuition and ability to see the whole picture. Blockages in the Third Eye may show up as indecisiveness, poor memory, confusion, nightmares, and poor insight. To clear blockages of the Third Eye, I suggest applying one drop of Patchouli directly to the Third Eye and visualize what it is that you want, again, making your intentions clear to manifest what it is that you would like more of in your life. Other ways to clear blockages in the Third Eye is to star gaze, daydream or to focus on the present moment.
Amethyst is the crystal that is associated with the Third Eye and can help balance the chakra simply by holding it or having it near you. Oils that may help to balance the Third Eye are Patchouli, Rosemary, Basil, Thyme, and Juniper. These can be diffused or applied to the palm of your non-dominant hand, rubbed with your dominant hand, and then inhaled directly while affirming “I am calm”.
Balancing the Throat Chakra
The Throat Chakra lies in the center of our throat and is associated with our ability to communicate, our inner voice, clarity, and creativity. Blockages in the Throat Chakra may show up as not being able to clearly communicate your thoughts, being unable to explain or express yourself. Blockages in the Throat Chakra may also show up in creativity blocks.
To help balance the Throat Chakra, try singing, journaling, talking out whatever is bothering you, or taking on an art project while keeping a Lapus Azul or piece of Turquoise nearby. Oils that may help balance the Throat Chakra are Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Cypress, Geranium, or Basil. I suggest applying a drop of your preferred oil to the palm of your non-dominant hand, rubbing it with your dominant hand and inhaling deeply while affirming “I express myself freely”.
Balancing the Heart Chakra
The Heart Chakra sits in the center of our chest behind the breastbone. It is associated with our ability to love and to be loved. Blockages in the Heart Chakra may show up as feeling broken hearted, feeling unloved or not being able to love yourself or others. Self-doubt, negative self-talk and feelings of being unworthy are also associated with blockages in the Heart Chakra.
To balance the Heart Chakra and clear blockages, I suggest placing essential oil of Rose, Geranium, Bergamot, Lavender or Melissa in the palm of your hand, inhaling deeply and placing your hand over your Heart Chakra while affirming “I am loved, and I am worthy of love”. To further open the Heart Chakra, sit up straight with your shoulders back and your chin up and then begin to move your shoulders in a figure 8 motion to spiral your spine.
Other activities associated with opening the heart and balancing the Heart Chakra include self-care activities such as baths, massage, meditation or going on a walk. Volunteering for a good cause, forgiving someone you love for past hurts and forgiving yourself will also help to balance the Heart Chakra. Green Aventurine and Rose Quartz are crystals that can be utilized while participating in balancing activities.
Balancing the Solar Plexus
The Solar Plexus which is associated with confidence and control is located just above the naval. It is also associated with our digestive organs. For this reason, blockages in the Solar Plexus may show up as digestive issues as well as feelings of anger and helplessness. Did you know that we hold emotions within our organs and anger is held in the Liver? Other ways that blockages show up in the Solar Plexus is in your ability to finish tasks. If the Solar Plexus is blocked, then you may find it difficult to complete tasks in a timely manner.
To clear blockages in the Solar Plexus, you can diffuse, inhale directly or apply your choice of one of the following oils to your naval. Oils associated with balancing the Solar Plexus are, Lemongrass, Ginger, Juniper, Lemon, or Peppermint which are all also great for digestion. One activity that I find helpful in clearing blockages in the Solar Plexus is to write down what is bothering you and then to burn it (in a safe manner of course). The act of burning what you have written down helps to destroy the thoughts that are bothering you.
Another way to balance the Solar Plexus is to hold a Tiger’s Eye or Citrine crystal while affirming, “I can accomplish my dreams”.
Balancing the Sacral Chakra
The Sacral Chakra sits just below the naval and is known as our sexual powerhouse. It is associated with relationships and our ability to connect to others. Blockages in the Sacral Chakra show up in a loss of creativity, feelings of depression and despair as well as not being able to find solutions to everyday solutions.
Oils that may help balance the Sacral Chakra are Orange, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, and Patchouli. They can be used by applying one drop in your non-dominant hand and then rubbing with your dominant hand, inhaling directly and then placing your hands directly under your naval while affirming “I constantly have new ideas to create the life that I want”.
Other ways to balance the Sacral Chakra include participating in anything that involves water whether taking a bath, kayaking, paddle boarding, or swimming in a lake or walking by a river or other body of water as water releases negative ions which are a good thing. Carnelian is one crystal that is associated with helping to balance the Sacral Chakra.
Balancing the Root Chakra
Finally, we come to the Root Chakra which represents our foundation and feeling of being grounded in stability. It is located at the base of the spine and provides emotional strength in the face of anxiety. Blockages in the Root Chakra may show up as having low self-esteem, low energy, issues with money or in addictions.
To help balance the Root Chakra, you can use Red Jasper along with essential oils of Cedarwood, Myrrh, Vetiver, or Patchouli while sitting in nature. Meditating while imagining a red light while affirming “I am confident and full of energy” is another way to become grounded and balance the Root Chakra. Other ways to balance the Root Chakra include planting a garden, walking barefoot to ground yourself, or doing something physical to raise your endorphins.
There are many other chakras in the body, and several different ways to clear each. We have barely scratched the surface here talking about some elements of the seven main chakras. For more information on how to heal our chakras, I recommend the book Chakra Healing: A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Healing Techniques that Balance the Chakras by Margarita Alcantara which can be found on Amazon.
